English Essay~ Identity~ Blueback~
Introduction~
There may be many factors and personnel that had influenced on Abel’s identity throughout his life. Some of that may include~ the surroundings, Abel’s mother, Blueback and the incident with Costello.
Surroundings~
Abel lived in Longboat Bay for most of his life. Water and fish surrounded him. Abel was a natural in the water; his mum says “ he was a diver before he was born.” Abel loved the bay and enjoyed diving with his mother and had enjoyed his quiet life in the bay. When he went to school in the city he felt “hemmed in and surrounded”. The water inspired him to study the ocean and become a marine biologist. Abel sometimes felt lonely in his surroundings but he gets used to it. The sea always made Abel wonder what the fish thought; “they tied his mind up in knots but he never gave up wondering” and made Abel want to learn the language of the sea.
Dora Jackson~ Abel’s mother~
Abel’s mother was a good mechanic and taught Abel how to run and fix boats. She was Abel’s best friend and Abel confides her in everything. She was tough and independent ever since Abel’s father passed away when a shark got him during pearl diving one day. She influenced Abel to be just like her~ strong, independent, good at diving and managing boats. Dora Jackson was patient and had “outlasted those sneaky businessmen” when they wanted to sell the Jackson’s property and “had outlast them all” the politicians, bosses, scientists all over the country who ignored her when she wrote letters to them about the bay and Blueback.
Blueback~ the
blue groper~
Blueback the big, blue groper had a great influence on Abel due to thee fact that Blueback was Abel’s best friend. Abel met Blueback when he was young had always missed Blueback when he left home~ whether it was for school or for research as a marine biologist. Blueback influenced Abel to do something to protect the bay when it was near disaster and when the fierce storm hit Longboat Bay.
The Costello incident~
Costello was an abalone diver and has a bad reputation for being a “reef stripper” and “peoples say he takes everything he sees”. Costello tortured a tiger shark using a red buoy, where had his name stencilled on the side, on the length of the chain, attached to the tiger shark. The shark was dying of starvation and exhaustion. The experience with Costello taught Abel, “there was nothing in nature as cruel and savage as a greedy human being”.
Conclusion~
As you can see, Abel’s surroundings, mother, Blueback and the incident with Costello had a major influence on Abel’s identity. There are some minor factors which might have influenced Abel but these are the main ones.
